The Quiet Power Shoe: This autumn, the Derby isn’t just a fashion item — it’s a mindset.
Zurich, August. For immediate release
Fashion trends are catching up with quiet quitting — the cultural shift where workers stop going above and beyond in roles that don’t respect their time, energy, or boundaries. Born on TikTok in 2022 and fueled by burnout, remote work, and growing disillusionment with hustle culture, quiet quitting isn’t about leaving your job — it’s about leaving behind the performance. Doing your work well, without letting it define who you are.
Now, fashion follows suit: dressing with purpose, comfort, and clarity. And this autumn, Derby shoes are leading that quiet revolution: understated, versatile, and quietly radical. Next season, the Derby isn’t just a fashion item — it’s a mindset.
“The Derby is not trying to impress,” “It just gets things done — beautifully.”
says Teresa Marcos, Head of Design at Hockerty
A shoe for soft rebels
Derby shoes, traditionally formal and masculine, are now preferred by those who value function and presence over formality and performance. From minimalists to hybrid workers, the Derby remains the go-to shoe for power and versatility.
Derby shoes allow a better fit for people with wider or slimmer feet due to the flexible lacing system. Adjusting the lacing provides a range of options for securing the shoes loosely or tightly, making them a versatile and traditional choice.
The History, rewritten
Derby shoes, first worn in the 19th century for countryside walks, are now icons of genderless style and modern utility. Today, they come in various materials and styles, reflecting our journey from rigid expectations to self-expression.
The anti-statement statement
During a time when subtle messages reign supreme - understated elegance, humble self-assurance, functional attire - the Derby is a flawless match. It isn't about making a scene. It's about aiding, exploring, functioning, and functioning. These shoes declare: I have no need to show off, and I appear stylish while doing so.
Why now?
- Versatility: Polished enough for the office, relaxed enough for the weekend.
- Comfort: Open-laced and structured — supportive without restriction.
- Cultural relevance: The Derby is the footwear companion to our cultural shift: slower, smarter, and more intentional.
This autumn, the loudest trend is the quietest one. And it walks in Derby shoes.
